Bird City Century II Development Foundation is actively involved in community development which will assist in maintaining a high quality of life and decrease the out migration of our families. BIRD CITY STRATEGIC PLAN: In order to take a proactive role in community development, a 5-year (2014-2019) strategic plan had been developed. During town hall meetings, the citizens of Bird City identified the issues they felt of most importance to the survival and growth of their community. Feel free to review the Bird City Strategic Plan and its goals and objectives for Education, Community & Business Development, Recreation, City Infrastructure & Beautification, and Housing.
We are a town on the move — creating a community that supports our residents and businesses. Highlights of our collaborations with our Bird City Century II Development Foundation, local business and more include:
2023 – ongoing: Bird City Clinic Project: BCCII and Cheyenne County Hospital are partnering to build a $1.5 million, 2,800-square-foot replacement facility designed to provide modern, accessible healthcare close to home. The two organizations are actively pursuing grant funding, but construction will not begin until full funding is secured. Once completed, the new clinic will feature multiple exam rooms, a procedure room, a lab, and a medication area, enhancing the quality of care for patients. The goal is to open the clinic as soon as funding allows.
2022 – 2023 – Housing Initiative: Bird City Century II broke ground on a brand-new home at 214 W. 4th Street. We’re proud to share that our housing project has garnered significant attention and recognition, helping to highlight the significance of the housing initiative for small towns like ours. BCCII broke ground on a second house in 2023 at 322 E. 6th Street. Both homes sold. These houses are just the first step in working to address the challenge of access to living and housing in rural communities.
2017 – 2019 – Safe Routes to School: Bird City received $15,000 from the Kansas Department of Transportation to complete Phase 1 of the Safe Routes to School Program. In phase 2 with support from the Bird City Century II Development Foundation and the Cheylin School District, the City of Bird City was awarded $200,000 from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The grant, matched with $50,000 from Bird City Century II, was used to repair and replace damaged sidewalks along main routes used by students walking to school.
2016 – Cougar Cub Daycare: Seeing a need for childcare in the community, the Bird City Century II Development Foundation built a new daycare facility at 224 E. 6th St which is to the east of the Cheylin Wellness Center. The Cougar Cub Daycare is a nonprofit licensed for up to 12 children and is now serving our families with young children.
2015 – Upgrading Water Lines: The City of Bird City replaced all water meters and water lines throughout the town.
2014 – New Business Space: To attract businesses to Bird City, the former Prairie Land Electric building was purchased and transformed into a modern commercial facility ready for occupancy.
2013 – Cheylin Wellness Center: A long-held goal of our community, the Cheylin Wellness Center opened its doors as a free gym and fitness center. A dedicated group of individuals created the plans and led the project as a collaboration between the town and school.
2012 – Senior Housing. Bird City Senior Estates, consisting of 2-duplexes, was built by an area developer when hearing that Bird City needed senior housing.
2011 – Business Incubator Space: The Robertson-Griffin-Bacon Memorial Building is now a business incubator building located in downtown Bird City. Formerly the Security State Bank building, the Bird City Century II Development Foundation purchased and renovated this building in memory of its donors.
2011 – Enhanced Community Space: The American Legion Hall was gifted to the Bird City Century II Development Foundation in 2011 and underwent a major renovation in 2012. The American Legion Hall is available for weddings, funerals, auctions, meetings and community events. An earlier addition to the Hall in 2006 created space for the Foundation offices.
2009 – 5th Street Housing: With approval and funding from the State of Kansas, two two-single family homes and two duplex apartments (a total of six new homes) were built. Construction began in October 2009, and tenants moved in the following August.
2009 – Supporting our grocery store: Since 2009, Hometown Market has expanded its produce, freezer and beverage sections with new coolers and updated lighting. New flooring, windows and doors were replaced in 2014-2015.
2008 – Job Creation McCarty Dairy: McCarty Family Farms, was recruited to Bird City in 2007. The 1,800 head dairy initially created 20 jobs, and we welcomed more than 20 children to the Cheylin School District. The dairy expanded in 2011 and today houses 3,200 cows, employs over 30 people and ships milk to a processing facility in Rexford, KS, owned by McCarty Family Farms, and supplies condensed milk to a Dannon yogurt plant in Texas. 2008 – Bird City Town Sign: Starting in 2008, the town landscaped the entrance to Bird City with a new sign and flagpoles and added brick reinforcements in 2015.

2007 – Van Doren Park Renovations: Our City Park was renovated in its entirety over a two-year period between 2005-2007. Community members participated and continue to make ongoing improvements.
