Cheylin JV Half Game vs. Healy @ Home
February 8th, 2008
CH 11/ H 4 CH 26/ H 13
Points- Ana Ponce and Tia Sager 5; Teryn Carmichael, Samantha Robertson, Naomi Reeh, and Sydney Busse 4
Rebounds- Ana Ponce 13; Whitney Churchwell 7; Tia Sager 3; Debi Banister and Naomi Reeh 2; Samantha Robertson, Mandie Walden, and Sydney Busse 1
Assists- Teryn Carmichael and Naomi Reeh 2; Whitney Churchwell, Samantha Robertson, Ana Ponce, and Mandie Walden 1
Steals- Sydney Busse 2; Ana Ponce, Whitney Churchwell, and Teryn Carmichael 1
Coach’s Comments: Another fun 2 quarters of JV ball. Ana Ponce was hot on the boards, we had multiple steals with fast break scoring. These girls are really learning some stron fundamentals and have pushed the A team all year.
Cheylin vs. Healy @ Home
February 8th, 2008
CH 8/ H 6 CH 19/ H 18 CH 27/ H 35 CH 40/ H 45
Points- Tia Sager 14; Blanca Ponce 9; Colleen Shrader and Kaedra Dixson 4; Sydney Busse 3; Whitney Churchwell, Teryn Carmichael, and Naomi Reeh 2
Rebounds- Tia Sager 15; Colleen Shrader 7; Ana Ponce 4; Whitney Churchwell, Kaedra Dixson, and Blanca Ponce 2; Teryn Carmichael, Samantha Robertson, Naomi Reeh, Mindy Antholz, and Sydney Busse 1
Assists- Tia Sager 3; Mindy Antholz 2; Whitney Churchwell, Teryn Carmichael, Colleen Shrader, Naomi Reeh, and Blanca Ponce 1
Steals- Colleen Shrader 3; Tia Sager 2; Teryn Carmichael, Ana Ponce, Naomi Reeh, and Blanca Ponce 1
Blocks- Blanca Ponce 1
Coach’s Comments: We outshot, out-rebounded and cause Healy more turnovers. However, we shot 7 free-throws to their 28 and it made the difference in the game. We struggled in the 3rd quarter and came back in the 4th, but they started to stall with 5 minutes to go and we just couldn’t get any closer than 3. Blanca had a great scoring night as did Tia. Otherwise, the scoring was pretty spread out.
Cheylin vs. Hitchcock Co. @ Home
February 9th, 2008
CH 3/ H 19 CH 6/ H 43 CH 11/ H 58 CH 25/ H 74

Steals- Teryn Carmichael and Colleen Shrader 3; Whitney Churchwell, Naomi Reeh, and Mindy Antholz 1
Blocks- Naomi Reeh and Sydney Busse 1
Coach’s Comments: The girls were out of sync this game. We were without starters Tia Sager and Blanca Ponce. We were also without Ana Ponce and Mindy Antholz was only about half speed after injury at Weskan. We actually did not play as bad as the score indicates, but we were cold and shot after shot bounced out. Our fourth quarter definitely looked better. |

Assists- Carmichael and Ponce 2
Steals- Ponce 6; Carmichael 4; Reeh and Busse 1
Blocks- Churchwell 1
Coach’s Comments: An exciting two quarter of play, but we came up on the short end. We had great ball recovery from Ana Ponce and Teryn Carmichael and great feeds into Naomi Reeh. We saw a lot of hustle from Sydney Busse, Whitney Churchwell, Mandie Walden, Deb Banister and Sam Robertson.
Varsity vs. Rawlins County @ Atwood
CH 9/ RC 13 CH 18/ RC 27 CH 27/ RC 45 CH 39/ RC 56
Points- Sager 10; Antholz 9; B. Ponce and Dixson 6; A. Ponce 4; Reeh and Shrader 2
Rebounds- Antholz 9; A. Ponce and Dixson 7; Shrader 4; Churchwell 3; Reeh, Sager, and B. Ponce 2; Carmichael and Robertson 1

Steals- Reeh 2; Shrader, Dixson, Antholz, and Sager 1
Blocks- Dixson 4; A. Ponce and Shrader 1
Coach’s Comments: Although we really wanted a win over the Buffs, I think we played an exceptional game and gave Atwood more than they had expected. We had great scoring all around and were able to break their press quite effectively.
January 25th
Half Game JV vs. Wheatland/Grinnell @ Home
CH 6/ WG 6 CH 21/ WG 22
Points- Sager 9; Reeh 6; Carmichael 3; Busse 2; Churchwell 1

Assists- Churchwell, Carmichael, A. Ponce, and Busse 1
Steals- Robertson, A. Ponce, and Sager 2; Churchwell and Reeh 1
Coach’s Comments: Another set of exciting quarters from the JV. We didn’t lose…we just ran out of time! Great scoring all around with the assists going into Sager on the inside. Great hustle and ball recovery all around too.
Varsity vs. Wheatland/Grinnell @ Home
CH 14/ WG 14 CH 22/ WG 34 CH 30/ WG 47 CH 38/ WG 62
Points- Sager 12; B. Ponce 10; Antholz and Dixson 6; A. Ponce and Busse 2
Rebounds- Sager 8; Antholz 5; A. Ponce and B. Ponce 4; Busse, Shrader, and Dixson 3; Reeh 2; Churchwell 1
Assists- Shrader 5; Churchwell, Carmichael, A. Ponce, B. Ponce, Sager 1
Steals- B. Ponce 3; Carmichael 2; Shrader and Banister 1
Coach’s Comments: Wheatland/Grinnell posed threats that our defense had not faced this year. They had two tall strong insides and a pair of forwards that could and did hit the 3’s on the perimeter. Sager and Dixson took on the inside…but we still missed way too many. Blanca Ponce and Antholz poured on the perimeter shooting but we still came up a little short. Shrader led with 5 assists for the night and Sager led the rebounding.
February 1st
Half Game JV vs. Weskan @ Weskan
CH 11/W 18 CH 13/ W 34
Points- Carmichael 5; Churchwell, A. Ponce, Busse, and Sager 2
Rebounds- Sager 8; Busse and A. Ponce 3; Churchwell 2; Carmichael and Walden 1
Assists- A. Ponce 2
Steals- Carmichael 5; Walden and Banister 1
Blocks- Churchwell and Walden 1
Coach’s Comments: Bright spots were Carmichael’s steals and Walden’s steals and block. We played better than the stats show, but we were cold and couldn’t hit anything. Again, I would like to play them with a full and healthy roster.
Varsity vs. Weskan @ Weskan
CH 5/ W 18 CH 13/ W 37 CH 23/ W 48 CH 29/ W 64
Points- Dixson 12; Sager 7; Antholz and Carmichael 3; Shrader and B. Ponce 2
Rebounds- Sager 6; A. Ponce 3; Busse, Antholz, B. Ponce, and Shrader 2; Churchwell and A. Ponce 1
Assists- Shrader and Churchwell 2; A. Ponce, Dixson, Antholz, and Busse 1
Steals- Shrader 5; Sager 3; Antholz and Carmichael 2; A. Ponce and Dixson 1
Coach’s Comments: Hopefully, this game was out low point. We only took 10 girls due to illness and of the 10 only two were healthy. Dixson really dug in and played her personal best game in the second half. Everyone else gave it all they had…they just were too sick to give much. We are looking forward to a new week and healthier bodies! |

“The girls played a relaxed and fun game against Bethune. We had the upper hand all night. It was fun to run some plays we had not been confident with before and move girls around to new positions. Eight of the 13 met at least part of their individual goals. Colleen Shrader had the stat keepers scrambling to keep up with her steals. Busse had her best game of the year, and Ana Ponce did an awesome job of covering for the injured Antholz. Sager continues to be a lead scorer due in part to the awesome assists of her teammates!”

“What a fun game to watch. These girls dug in and came back from a 10 point deficit to win by 3. Key in the win were steals by Carmichael and Ponce, and assists by Ponce. Reeh was hot on the rebounds, and Carmichael and Sager kept putting the ball in the hoop. Robertson, Busse, Churchwell, and Banister kept a tough defense up on the bottom side of the court and didn’t allow any easy shots.”

“This game has to be the highlight of out season thus far! How fun to beat the team that won our league tournament last week!! The starting five played most of the game with just a little subbing at key times. Sager had an awesome inside game with assists coming from Antholz and Shrader. Shrader and Sager’s steals kept the ball in our possession as did Antholz’s rebounds. We played defense like a well oiled machine and we were patient and broke their press time after time! Way to go Lady Cougars!” |

“I am so proud of these girls! They play an awesome game. Our defense was super tough. We had lots of rebounds, our shooting percentage was up and our free-throws helped put us on top. We had nearly the same number of fouls as Triplains, but shot 13 more free-throws. Our press break and offense worked the ball into Tia and afforded her the opportunity to score.”

Rebounds- Churchwell and Sager 7; Ponce 5; Carmichael and Robertson 3; Busse 1

“We played two quarters against Triplains. The girls got their first Junior Varsity win by playing tough defense and getting lots of rebounds. Our free throws won the game for us. I really like what I am seeing in these young girls, they really step up to the challenge when we ask them to. Our turnovers were much better this game too! We have added two more players: Mandie Walden and Debi Banister, who are both juniors. I takes great courage to come out mid-season, but they are working hard to learn the plays and will be a great addition to our team.”

Blocks- Shrader 2; Dixson, A. Ponce, and Churchwell 1 each
“This was a fun game to watch. It was a great to come back and beat a team that we had lost to previously. Our defense worked together to hold Ritter to 8 points and their comeback star, Aisha Walter only scored 9. Our offense was able to penetrate their defense and get the ball into our post players on a consistent basis. We still need to put 4 good quarters together and then we ought to be able to compete with most teams we encounter.”
Tuesday Games
Girls vs. Weskan
CH 14/ W 20 CH 26/ W 37 CH 43/ W 55 CH 43/ W 70

Assists- Shrader 3; Antholz 2; Dixson 1
Steals- Sager and Antholz 3; Churchwell and B. Ponce 1
Blocks- Shrader, Dixson, and Sager 1 each
“We played number one ranked Weskan. They had a tough defense that forced way too many turnovers. We did play quite consistently, except for out third quarter. We were plagued by many injuries in the second half and our younger girls had to step up and finish for us. This is the first game that I have every seen us give up; however, I think we have that resolved.”
Friday Games
Girls vs. Brewster
CH 9/ B 17 CH 20/ B 29 CH 26/ B 44 CH 33/ B 62
Points- Sager 11; Shrader 9; Dixson 6; Churchwell, A. Ponce, and B. Ponce 2; Carmichael 1

Steals- A. Ponce 5; Shrader 2; Dixson 1
Blocks- Shrader and A. Ponce 1
“We were disappointed with this game. We really wanted a win over Brewster. We play a decent first half, but fell apart in the second half. We were greatly hindered by playing with injuries in Antholz and Sager and Reeh is recovering from illness. They hustled and never gave up, but definitely they were not up to their norm. We also missed the hustle of Samantha Robertson who is out with a sprained ankle.”
Saturday Games
Girls vs. Triplains
CH 19/ TP 13 CH 29/ TP 26 CH 36/ TP 47 CH 48/ TP 69
Points- B. Ponce 12; Sager 11; Carmichael 9; Shrader 6; Reeh 5; A. Ponce 3; Antholz 2

Steals- Shrader 5; Busse 3; Churchwell, Carmichael, A. Ponce, Reeh, B. Ponce, and Sager 1 each
Blocks- Churchwell, A. Ponce, and Busse 1 each
“This was another one of those disappointing games that we thought we could win. We were handicapped by the re-injury of Mindy Antholz at the end of the first quarter. We also missed Kaedra Dixson at the post presence. Triplains Gfeller girls were hot on 3 point shots making 12 and scoring 49 between the two of them. We would stop one and the other would start shooting. We look forward to getting back to 2 games a week vs. 4 this week on top of semester finals.” |

Cheylin Teams Win First Round
Games were very close Monday night, but the Cougars pulled through and won both the boys and girls games. The final score for the girls with a Golden Plains girl making a three in the last second was 37 to 36. The boys’ game went into overtime and the final score was 66 to 58. The fans during the girls’ game had to double check the score to make sure it was a win and the fans during the boys’ game were on the very edge of their seats as fouls were getting close.
Both coaches are proud of their team and look forward to the week ahead. Games will be played on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Friday’s games will be held at the Colby Community Building or the Colby High School depending on how the Tuesday games turn out. Saturday games will be held at the Community Building. Tuesday games will be against Weskan girls and Brewster boys. Friday and Saturday games are not yet determined. The teams can use all the support they can get throughout the week. |

Sagebrush Shootout Results
These past weeks of Cheylin basketball have been busy, but the players are improving and making their coaches proud. At Brewster, the high school teams played three games. The first games were played on Tuesday, December 4th against Rawlins County. The teams both fell to them and played their second rounds on that Friday, December 7th. On Friday the Lady Cougars played Golden Plains and the men played St. Francis. The Saturday games for that week were postponed due to snow and were played in the morning on Saturday the 15th. Playing for 7th place, the girls played Triplains and the boys played Stratton.
During the free throw competition at Sagebrush, Mindy Antholz shot for the girls and Sam Hengen shot for the boys. Mindy and Sam both made 17 of the 25 free throws putting Mindy in 4th place. The three point competitors were Lincoln Pochop and Mindy Antholz.
Even though the boys and girls teams both received 8th place in the tournament they are improving as they showed in their games against the Dundy County Tigers. Statistics for the Dundy County game will be found in next week’s paper. The following includes the Sagebrush Tournament games.
Tuesday Games
Cheylin Girls vs. Rawlins County
CH 2/ RC 18 CH 12/ RC 28 CH 25/ RC 47 CH 32/ RC 59
Points- Dixson and Sager 10; Shrader 6; Reeh 4; Churchwell 2
Rebounds- Sager 8; Shrader 7; Dixson 4; Antholz 3; B. Ponce and Churchwell 2; A. Ponce and Reeh 1
Assists- Reeh 5; Shrader 4; Dixson 1
Steals- Sager, A. Ponce, B. Ponce 2; Antholz Carmichael, Robertson 1
Blocks- Antholz and Dixson 2; Sager 1
Coach’s Comments- We played a tough game against a fast team. Rawlins County came out with a tough denial full court press that shook us up. If not for the 16 point first quarter deficit, we would have come out a lot closer. We learned a few things about ourselves and our strengths and weaknesses, so now we know what we need to work on!
Cheylin Boys vs. Rawlins County
CH 14/ RC 15 CH 24/ RC 37 CH 36/ RC 56 CH 48/ RC 76

Steals- Carmichael 5; Reeh 4; A. Ponce 3; Antholz and Dixson 2; B. Ponce and Busse 1
Blocks- Dixson 4; Carmichael, A. Ponce, and Churchwell 1
Coach’s Comments- We outplayed Golden Plains in every aspect except points. We shot 70 shots to their 52, cause 25 turnovers and gave up 21, we had 52 rebounds to their 45. The game came down to our poor shooting percentage and multiple fouls from key players. We only shot 24% compared to Golden Plains 42%. We also let Ritter score too much and needed to have shut her down. She’s a fast player and when we did try to shut her down we gave her 18 free throw attempts of which she made 10.

Steals- Shrader 4; Sager, Carmichael, A. Ponce, and Reeh 3; Antholz 2; B. Ponce and Churchwell 1
Blocks- Dixson and Sager 1each
Coach’s Comments- We started out very weak and let Triplains dominate. We had way too many turnovers. Second half the girls did come out and play decent. Many free throws were also missed and it really cost us.
Cheylin Boys vs. Stratton
CH 13/ S 12 CH 24/ S 20 CH 34/ S 33 CH 42/ S 52
Points- White 13; Pochop 12; Hengen 11; Walden 6

It was disappointing to be pressed the entire game, but the girls never gave up. We lost a key player to the flu and that really made everyone step up and meet the challenge.” The statistics are show below for the varsity girls’ game against Wallace County:
CH 5/ WC 15 CH 17/ WC 29 CH 22/ WC 45 CH 29/ WC 59

High School Girls
High school girls have started another season, however this year with a new coach. First year varsity basketball coach Deb Pochop is an alumni college basketball player from McPherson College who has high anticipations for the girls. Coach Pochop says, “I am excited to work with an outstanding group of young athletes. The girls are working hard and are having fun. We are looking toward a successful season.”
Playing basketball was not the only sport Coach Pochop played in college. In fact, she played basketball for 2 years and softball for 2 years. She has also coached youth league for 4 years and gymnastics for 6 years.
Growing up in O’Neill, Nebraska, Coach Pochop has always loved the game of basketball. Her high school team went the State Championships 1 of the 4 years that she was there and her college team placed 3rd at Nationals. She has learned what it takes to achieve your goals and wants to pass it on to her players. The girls have taken to her very well.
Mrs. Pochop is currently living in Beardsley, where she has lived for the last eleven years. She has received degrees in Pre-Physical Therapy; Physical Therapist Asst.; and Massage Therapy. Her husband, Michael Pochop, owns MiDe Connections Plumbing, Heating and Air-conditioning. She also has two children, Ellie who is in 6th grade and Shawn who is in 5th grade. Ellie has started her first basketball season this year and is taking after her mother as a point guard.
Coach Pochop’s assistant coach is Jim Poore. Coach Pochop says, “I am honored to be coaching with veteran Coach Poore. His established report with the girls and post knowledge are invaluable.” This is Jim’s second year with the girls, but it is his ninth year coaching basketball.
Jim in his younger days enjoyed all of the sports at McDonald High School. After completing high school, he went into the Navy for four years. He has lived in the McDonald area all of his life, and has raised two young ladies. His daughter Jodie is married to Chad Wright and now lives north of Campus, Kansas. Jodie and Chad have a son Taylor (age 6) and a daughter Courtney (age 4). Jim’s other daughter is Jeana. Jeana is currently residing in Hesston, Kansas and is working at a bank in Moundridge.
In the past, Mr. Poore was the middle school basketball assistant for one year and head coach for six. Coming in as a rule-10 coach, Coach Poore also loves the game, and most of all wants the girls to have fun. Coach Poore is well known for driving the activity bus. This is his 15th year driving the bus, and the kids greatly respect and like him.
Coach Poore said, “We are looking to win more games than last year, and the biggest thing is to have fun. We have the start of a good team with three returning starters. Coach Pochop is a first year coach who is doing a bang-up job with the girls. She really seems to understand them.”
The high school basketball girls are very excited for the season ahead, and they are taking to both coaches well. You don’t want to miss the girls in action this year!
The High School Boys
Morgan Grippin, fourth year health and P.E. teacher at Cheylin, is excited for the upcoming season. Head coach Grippin says, “This season will be exciting. We have a fast and talented team, and we expect to have a successful season.”
Growing up in Great Bend, Kansas, Mr. Grippin was active in football, basketball, track, and tennis. He also was a two time member of the Golden Belt all-star team for the 13, 14-15 year old baseball league. As a member of the team they placed 3rd in the state tournament. After graduating from Great Bend High School, Morgan went to FHSU and then moved to Leavenworth, Lawrence, St. Francis, Bird City, and now resides in Goodland.
Coach Grippin enjoys the game of basketball and has coached basketball since he was 18. He started by coaching a 4th and 5th grade traveling team in Great Bend and then coached a 6th grade traveling team in Hays. The Hays team had a successful year winning 22 of their 26 games. They were also tournament winners in all but two that year. This year will be Morgan’s second year as head basketball coach, but his fourth year coaching basketball at Cheylin.
He has also coached junior high football for 3 years placing 2nd in the freedom league in 2006 and has been the track coach for three years with this upcoming year being his fourth. In his three years of coaching track he has had a student qualify for state twice and 3 records have been broken.
Coach Grippin’s basketball assistant this year is Tony Walden. Mr. Grippin said, “Tony has been a great asset to the team, and I expect us to be a better team because of him.” Tony has also had an athletic past and is energized about the upcoming season.
Tony attended Cheylin High School 1980-1984 where he played basketball all four years along with football, track, and golf. He was part of the team making it to sub-state during one of the four years of basketball. All four years of basketball were winning seasons, but they were beat by Brewster during the playoffs three of the four years. In his other high school sports, Tony was a starting quarterback all four years, a high-jump record holder with a jump of 6’4” for one year, and his junior year the golf team was runner-up at state.
Tony graduated from Cheylin in 1984 and then attended Colby Community College. After a year at Colby he moved to Louisville, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; Denver, Colorado; and then to Bird City where he has been farming for the past 15 years. During the past he has driven semi and also has worked as an assistant manager for Kay Jewlers. Today Tony is married to Bobbie Walden, and they have two children who are both in high school. Mr. Walden has kept busy in the community by coaching flag football for two years and 3-on-3 for two years.
Even though this is Mr. Walden’s first year coaching a high school sport, he feels “That the basketball team should start to ignite some excitement into our community, because of the “Team” attitude and the younger talent joining the upper classmen.” Tony also said, “I enjoy working with this year’s head coach and hopefully together with this year’s coaching staff along with the great kids we can bring a sense of pride back into this community.” |

Wow! You really think you know a person until you start asking questions for a newspaper article. This week I had the pleasure of talking with the junior high basketball coaches, and I found out many things that I did not know before. Coach Keltz and Coach Carson are both looking forward to the upcoming season.
Coach Keltz said, “I am optimistic about the middle school basketball as there are some good kids who are working hard to compete. With hard work, winning attitudes, and luck we should be competing for the league championship in both A and B teams.” The boys have 22 players out for basketball making up 3 teams.
This is Keltz’s 8th year as a basketball coach, and 5th as a head basketball coach. In the past Mr. Keltz was the assistant coach for high school boys’ basketball for 5 years.
Mr. Keltz has also coached football and track for numerous years. He has been and was the high school’s head football coach for 6 years and assistant for 13. Junior high football was head coached by Keltz for 11 years. Junior high and high school track have also been coached by Mr. Keltz for 7 years.
This is his 5th year as the activities director. It may not seem like 19 years, but Mr. Keltz has been very active in the school system with FFA and agriculture classes since 1988. He is doing a great job with the boys and with the school. I think we can be very appreciative of the teacher, coach, and director that we have.
As for the girls in junior high basketball this year, they are scarce on players, having only 7 girls out. It is has been tough to scrimmage for the girls with such a small number out. Coach Carson said, “Right now we are working on fundamentals. People from the community have been helping with practice to scrimmage. I am hoping to have a successful and fun season.”
Mr. Carson has been a coach for 10 years. Five of those years were in Indonesia where he taught school and coached basketball and volleyball which he found very rewarding. Coach Carson has also taught and coached in Sharon Springs and Hays.
Mr. Carson has been back in the community for 2 years and has been a Cheylin substitute for those 2 years. This will be his 5th year coaching basketball and 3rd as head coach. He has also coached volleyball for 8 years, 5 years as head coach. He does a great job with the kids not only when substituting but also at Teens for Christ. Coach Carson is just what our junior high girls need and will do a wonderful job.
To watch the junior high this weekend, make plans to travel to Brewster on Friday and Saturday. The game times are as follows:
Friday
4:15- B Boys
5:30- A Boys
6:45- A Girls
Saturday
10:00- C Boys
11:00- A Boys
12:15- A Girls
1:30- B Boys
Our junior high teams need all the fans they can get this season. They will make everyone proud. Good luck to all the teams throughout the basketball season! |

The Cougars kicked it up a notch to finish their football season. Their last game was at home against the Golden Plains Bulldogs. Despite slight mistakes, the Cougars had a strong ending. “I was proud of how hard the kids played. We had some mistakes that ended up beating us, but we had a pretty solid effort.” The statistics for the Golden Plains game are as follows:
Tackles- Sam Hengen lead with 16; following him was Lamar Adams with 14; Lincoln Pochop 11; Jared Cahoj, Chris Walden, and Jay Hewitt 9; Jayden Cahoj 7; Rex Weishapl 6; and Craig Busse and Nick Els each had one.
Rushing- Sam Hengen was 18 for 96; Jared Cahoj was 7 for 54; Jacob White was 2 for 16; and Heath Antholz was 2 for 20
Passing- Caleb Keltz was 8 for 19 with 115 yards gained
Passes Caught- Lincoln Pochop was 2 for 41; Sam Hengen was 2 for 31; Adrian Garcia was 1 for 28; Jacob White was 2 for 10; and Jayden Cahoj was 1 for 5
Next years’ season is right around the corner and will be coming up sooner than we think. The three seniors, Sam Hengen, Lincoln Pochop, and Lamar Adams will be missed. They showed great leadership this year, and made a great impact on their teammates. Coach Keltz said, “They showed hard work to their teammates not only this year but all four years that they played.”
The season may have ended with a 1 and 8 record, but that does not show the effort put in. Coach Keltz and Coach Hengen can hold their heads high because they did a wonderful job. Coaching is not an easy task, even though they may have made it look that way. They showed the young men what it took to have dedication, teamwork, and leadership. Hard work did lead to accomplishments even if they were step by step.
Seasonal statistics are as follows:
Tackles- Sam Hengen lead with 87; followed by Lincoln Pochop with 75; Jay Hewitt with 68; Lamar Adams with 64; Jared Cahoj with 51; Jayden Cahoj with 49; Chris Walden with 44; Rex Weishapl with 33; Jacob White with 25; Heath Antholz with 20; Jacob Diers with 17; Max Hengen with 9; Lance Leonard and Andrian Garcia each with 7; Craig Busse with 5; Hudson Louderbaugh with 4; and Eric Estrada, Nick Els, and Caleb Keltz with 3.
Rushing- Sam Hengen lead with 170 for 781 yards; Jared Cahoj followed him with 20 for 227; Jacob White 44 for 135; Heath Antholz 18 for 93; Lincoln Pochop 20 for 58; Jayden Cahoj with 15 for 18; Chris Walden 2 for 15; and Caleb Keltz 13 for 6
Passing- Caleb Keltz lead with 53 of 115 with 571 yards gained with seven touchdowns and Jayden Cahoj was 9 of 17 with 65 yards gained
Passes Caught- Lincoln Pochop lead with 16 for 173 yards gained; Jacob White followed with 15 for 156 yards gained; Sam Hengen 10 for 150; Adrian Garcia 5 for 66; Jayden Cahoj 3 for 44; Jared Cahoj 4 for 37; Heath Antholz 4 for 21; and Chris Walden 2 for 18
Good job coaches and players! |

Another week of football has come and gone as the junior high had their last home games of the season. They took on the Weskan Coyotes and played very well. The flag football game was very exciting, but turned out to be a heartbreaker. The boys had the ball in the last minute with the score 14 to 8. However, they could not manage to get the touchdown. Coach Ketzner said that the boys blocked very well and tried very hard, and that that was all anyone could ask for.
The tackle game was another big win for our junior high boys. They came out and held Weskan several times deep in their end of the field. Several touchdowns were scored early in the game as the Cougars took over the game. The crowd was able to witness some tremendous tackles (some Coach Ketzner thought looked like high school hits). Coach Ketzner said, “The boys did a very good job of taking one play at a time and doing their jobs right.” The statistics were the following:
Tackles- Ethan and Fernando-9; Jeremiah-7; Dalton-6; Heath, Adam, Miguel-2; Josh and Ruben-1
Rushing- Dalton-3 touchdowns and 111 yards; Ethan 4 touchdowns and 85 yards; Jeremiah with 8; and Cory with 4 yards |

On Friday, October 5th the Cheylin Cougars traveled to Brewster where they took on the Brewster/Triplains team. The boys came out tough in the beginning of the game scoring the first touchdown. Things did not go as well after that, but Coach Keltz was proud and said, “We played a good team. Our guys played tough, except for pass defense.” The leading tackler for the night was Sam Hengen with 10. Following him was Walden and Pochop with 9; Hewitt with 7; Antholz with 6; L. Adams and Jayden Cahoj with 4; Leonard, Jarod Cahoj, White, Diers, and M. Hengen with 3; Busse with 2; and Jensen and Estrada with 1. Rushing yards were lead by S. Hengen with 31 for 144 yards. Antholz followed him with 1 for 4 yards and White with 8 for 2 yards. As for passing, Keltz was 3 for 14 with 36 yards gained. White caught two passes with a gain of 25 yards and Jayden Cahoj caught one pass for 11 yards.

We also had our best blocking all year.” The next flag game will be on Friday starting at 4:30. The boys will be taking on the undefeated Weskan Coyotes, and will gladly accept any extra cheers.
As for the tackle game last Thursday, the boys did very well. Ethan Young ran back the kick off to start the game, and Coach Ketzner said the boys dominated after that. “The boys are starting to like hitting hard,” said Coach Ketzner. Reuben lead the team with 8 tackles. Following him was Keenan with 7, Fernando with 6, Jeremiah with 6, Dalton with 5. Ethan, Cory, Heath, Adam, and Miguel each had three, and Joshua had one. Dalton had 13 yards and 4 touchdowns, and Ethan had 13 yards and 2 touchdowns. Keenan had an interception. Coach Ketzner said, “We all appreciate the fans coming out to cheer the boys on.” The boys are looking good, but sadly there are only two games left. This Friday will be the last home game for them. The volleyball games start at 4:00. |

The varsity boys played the Tribune jackrabbits last Thursday and had a hard fought win. The boys started out a little slow the first half and were down 20 to 6 at half time. “After half we decided that all we need to do as a team was our jobs and get our blocks. It was after this we started rolling” commented Coach Ketzner. With a minute left in the game, Tribune had the ball and the Cougars had to fight both a few poor calls and the clock not running a couple of plays to hold off and win the game. “It was a big relief to get another win. I feel the boys are playing good, but we have got to get all the team healthy and a little more confidence like we had the first two games.” said Coach Ketzner. Statistics for the game included:
Dalton with 2 touchdown and 196 yards and Ethan with 1 touchdown with 73 yards

The junior high football team had two more big wins on Thursday, September 13th. The flag game was a lot more evenly matched this week compared to last week. “The boys ran the ball well and did an excellent job on their tackles/flag pulling,” commented Coach Ketzner. A 28-0 win against the Golden Plains bulldogs was a good first win for the junior varsity, and the boys hope to continue their streak into next week’s game against Sharon Springs.
Against the Golden Plain’s varsity, the Cougars had a slow start and had to show Golden Plains that they wanted to win more than they did. Coach Ketzner’s comments included, “Once we got the ball rolling we ran all over them. At the end of the first half it was 36-0.” Dalton Magnani at half time had 140 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ethan Young had several yards and a touchdown. Maguel Navarro had a wonderful run for a touchdown as well. In the second half of the game the younger boys got to step up and take over the game. They held them to very few yards and only allowed a last second touchdown. The final score was 36-6. “Fernando Salinas, our newest player, had a wonderful game with an excellent job kicking off the ball and tackling,” said Coach Ketzner. Top tacklers were Cory Rucker with 13, Miguel with 12, Keenan with 10, Dalton with 8, Fernando with 7, and Ethan with 6. “The team has shown that they can play as a team and tackle well.”

Friday, August 24th the Cheylin Cougars held the annual Soap Scrimmage. The Soap Scrimmage has always been a way of letting the community see a little glimpse of what the Cougars have to offer for the year, and it was definitely shown that there is some major potential in effect and a large Cougar crowd to back them up.
Both Coach Beeson and Coach Keltz expressed their excitement for the upcoming season. Mr. Keltz said, “The kids are working hard with a good attitude. We should improve on last year’s record and become stronger as the year progresses.”
During the Soap Scrimmage the football team was split up into two sides. Lance Leonard, Sam Hengen, Jayden Cahoj, Chris Walden, Heath Antholz, Mitchell Jensen, Lincoln Pochop, Hudson Louderbaugh, Erick Estrada, and Craig Busse made up the blue team. Their opponents for the night on the white team were Lamar Adams, Caleb Keltz, Rex Weishapl, Jacob White, Jacob Diers, Jamie Adams, Jay Hewitt, Jarod Cahoj, Max Hengen, Nick Els, and Adrian Garcia. Winning the game for the night was the blue team 16 to 8. The boys had fun, but had to cut it short after the third quarter due to injuries. The Booster Club, who has always been a huge support in our community, made a great meal for everyone to enjoy and the turnout was great.
The Lady Cougars held a practice during the Soap Scrimmage to make their chances of injury before their tournament the next day slimmer. When the Lady Cougars traveled to the Healy tournament early Saturday morning they did not do as well as they would have liked to, but are bound to show improvement.
Preceding the boys’ football game on Friday, the girls took on Hitchcock County. Nebraska games are played a little different than Kansas, with a best three out of five rule. The girls pulled out a win with one of the four games that they played against the falcons. Coach Beeson said, “I was impressed with how well the girls played that night. They are really starting to show that they can play.”
The Friday football game turned out with a 50 to 6 loss. Coach Keltz’s comments included, “It was a tough game to lose! We had some mistakes that are correctable and I expect to see improvement next week against a tough opponent.” The statistics for Friday’s game are the following:
Passing- Caleb Keltz went 2 of 3 for 18 yards;
Passes caught- Walden 1 for 12 yards, Garcia 1 for 6 yards;
Rushing- Antholz 1 for 30 yards, Pochop 7 for 21 yards, Walden 2 for 15 yards, Jared Cahoj 1 for 8 yards (touchdown), S. Hengen 5 for 5 yards, and Keltz 1 for 2 yards.
Tackles- Lamar Adams lead tackles with 10, followed by Jayden Cahoj and Pochop with 8, Hewitt with 7, White 6, S. Hengen 5, Walden and Jarod Cahoj 3, Diers and J. Adams 2. Antholz, Keltz, M. Hengen, Louderbaugh, Estrada, and Els each had one.
